The mission of the Environmental Commission is to encourage the protection and appropriate development and use of the Township's natural resources. The Environmental Commission advises the Mayor and Council on land and water conservation and protection actions and pollution events; provides recommendations to the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment on land development applications; and sponsors community education and engagement activities. Projects include Earth Day events, an annual community-wide clean-up, stream sampling with school students, endangered species protection, and activities addressing drinking water protection, tree preservation and reforestation.

The ERI is an updated compilation of environmental features of the Township, and includes maps, tables and graphs that contain information on topics such as geology, climate, land use and biology. Washington Township Receives Sustainable Jersey Certification in 2017!
Washington Township is proud to officially be a Sustainable Community after receiving our Sustainable Jersey Certification! We can count ourselves among the more than 200 New Jersey municipalities who have achieved this status. Washington Township will be recognized at the Sustainable Jersey Luncheon during the New Jersey League of Municipalities Conference, on November 14, 2017.
